Auto Body Work Technician

A body work technician at an auto dealership is responsible for  repairing and restoring damaged vehicle bodies to their original condition in accordance with factory and dealership specifications. This role involves a mix of structural repair, cosmetic work, and customer interaction, ensuring vehicles are safe and aesthetically pleasing upon completion. 

Job Summary:
The Auto Body Technician will perform high-quality collision and body repairs on vehicles, ranging from minor dents and scratches to major structural damage. The technician is responsible for assessing damage, developing a repair plan, performing necessary repairs, and ensuring the final work meets all manufacturer and safety standards. 

Duties and Responsibilities :

• Damage Assessment: Inspect damaged vehicles to determine the full extent of the damage, estimate repair costs, and document all required parts and labor.
• Repair and Replacement:
• • Remove and replace damaged body parts, including fenders, doors, hoods, and bumpers, using hand and power tools.
  • Repair damaged panels by hammering out or patching dents, removing rust, and filling depressions with body filler.
  • Perform structural and frame alignment using specialized equipment to restore the vehicle's structural integrity.
  • Weld, rivet, or bond replacement panels and other components into place.
• Refinishing: Prepare repaired surfaces for painting by grinding, sanding, and masking areas not to be painted. Assist with or perform the application of primer, paint, and clear coat to match the vehicle's original finish.
• Quality Control: Inspect and test repaired vehicles for proper functioning, dimensional accuracy, and overall quality of workmanship.
• Communication & Documentation:
• • Communicate with the parts department to order necessary components.
  • Document all work performed on repair orders accurately.
  • Interact with customers and insurance adjusters professionally to explain repairs and address concerns.
• Safety & Compliance: Operate all equipment in a safe manner and adhere to all federal, state, and local regulations regarding hazardous waste disposal and safety protocols, including wearing required personal protective equipment.
• Shop Maintenance: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area. 

Qualifications and Skills:

• Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent required; a vocational certificate or associate degree in automotive body repair technology is preferred.
• Experience: Previous experience in an auto body repair shop setting is highly desirable.
• Certifications: ASE Certification or I-CAR certification is a plus and may be required for advancement. Manufacturer-specific training is also highly valued.
• Technical Skills:
• • Proficiency in using a wide range of hand and power tools, including welders, sanders, and paint spray guns.
  • Strong knowledge of automotive repair techniques, welding, and refinishing.
  • Basic understanding of vehicle mechanics and systems (e.g., airbags, suspension).
• Soft Skills:
• • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  • Good communication and customer service skills.
  • Effective time management and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Physical Demands: This is a physically demanding role that requires physical stamina, manual dexterity, and the ability to lift heavy parts and equipment. 

Work Environment:
Work is performed indoors in a body shop environment, which can be noisy and may involve exposure to dust, fumes, and paint. Safety precautions and personal protective equipment are strictly mandated.
