Civic Action Project, CEO & President
COCO Search (Civic Action Project) - Boston, MA, United States

The Position

Impossible? Imperative, and immediately possible as the first CEO & President of the Civic Action Project. The Civic Action Project (CAP) is a Massachusetts nonprofit founded in 2019 to achieve goals through fellowship programs for both seasoned executives and emerging leaders, as well as strategic initiatives that leverage CAPs decades of expertise and cross-sector collaboration.

CAP was founded and led by Massachusetts leaders who have contributed a collective 150 years of service. CAP seeks to hire a CEO & President who can lift CAPs management, elevate strategy and impact, and lead its next iteration. The successful candidate will serve as CAPs first formal CEO, collaborating with a Board eager to secure CAPs future. CAP has partners across universities, businesses, hospitals, biotech, software, AI & robotics, real estate, foundations, nonprofits, and quasi-public agencies, and CAPs alumni network supports ongoing programs and events.

The CEO will be equipped to build CAPs voice on important issues with care, respect, and thoughtful leadership, while remaining a big tent of ideas rather than a source of dogma. The CEO will report to the Board of Directors and will work with a new Board Chair. CAP currently has two full-time staff in addition to the founders and will lead them in the next chapter.

Qualifications and Qualities

CAPs next CEO should bring a passion for civic action and positive change, and a history as a proven fundraiser and respected voice among Massachusetts public and private sector leaders. Candidates should have a track record of building relationships across government and private sectors, depth in at least one key area of economic or civic development, and the ability to recruit program participants, speakers, partners, and donors. The CEO should be skilled at communicating a coherent strategic narrative and capable of leading and inspiring other leaders.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Organizational development experience, growing an initiative to stability and sustainability.
  • Leadership with an authentic voice in Massachusetts, and potential to collaborate beyond the states borders.
  • Professional development experience in programs or credentialing that universities and employers invest in.
  • Fund development success in attracting major investments from diverse funders.
  • Management expertise overseeing a nonprofit or similar organization and applying best practices.

Humor and the ability to give and accept feedback are welcomed and preferred.
